Pokkiri review

Tamizh(Vijay) is an underpaid don.He will be working under the dons of the city for money.Once he sees Sruthi(Asin).Later on both of them fall in love and proposes each other. Then one day she comes to know that Tamizh is an underpaid don. Thus she asks him to change his attitude. But Tamizh doesn't.After sometime she comes to know about the true love of Tamizh and thus both of them join hands. Here comes a major twist in the tale.Tamizh is not an underpaid don anymore. He is actually an IPS officer. His father,a GYM owner is also an retired inspector. His ultimate aim is to destroy the mafia gang lead by the international don Ali bhai(Prakash raj) and make the country peaceful.Later on Sruthi comes to know about it.The rest of the story is about how Vijay kills the Ali bhai gang.

Like Vijay's previous movies, this is also an action film.As usual Vijay rocks in his dance and fight. But the comedy department was handled by Vadivelu in this film.

Asin doesn't have a great scope to perform. But she looks good in the romantic scenes and songs with Vijay.

The major plus point of the film is Vadivelu's comedy,Vijay's action cum romance and Prakash raj's character.Though Prakash raj's role isn't that big,he has performed well and lifts the film in the second half. The first half of the film is filled with a right combination of comedy, romance and action.Vadivelu's comedy deserves a special note.Especially his "Sutrum Vizhi chudare" comedy was really funny.

Manisharma has composed the tunes with a right combination of folk, melody and western numbers.Except for the Mumait Khan's item number song, all other songs are choreographed well.Manisharma deserves a special note for his "Vasantha mullai" remix song.

Pefsi Vijayan's fight sequences were really nice and this movie has the best fight sequences for a Vijay film. The stunt master Fefsi Vijay should be applauded for that matter.

On the downside Vijay's usual charm was missing in this film.Director Prabhudeva seems to have made Vijay to depict Mahesh Babu's body language.(Hero of the original Telugu version- Pokiri)Perhaps the movie could've been even better if it had had a typical Vijay's style and mannerisms. He could've also trimmed the role of the inspector who tries to keep Asin in his control. His characterization was really boring and reduces the pace of the film here and there. The pre-interval romantic scene could've also been trimmed as its comes as a speed-breaker.

But even with some boring aspects and some typical Vijay's enthusiasm missing, the movie
still looks fine over all.So if you are looking out for a decent Masala entertainer then go and watch Pokkiri. This movie will satisfy you.

Rating - 3.4/5

0-1: Stay away
1-2: Pathetic
2-3: Average
3-4: fine
4-5: Superb

Note: I swear that reviews and box office reports are given as a neutral and not as a fan of Vijay.

Box office:
The movie opened big like his previous successful movies Gilli Tirupachi and Sivakasi.Initially it was declared Super hit.But later on the movie catered many repeat audience and was unanimously declared as a Blockbuster in Tamilnadu,Kerala and Overseas. This is the biggest grosser of the year 2007 next to Sivaji. This was also the highest grossing Tamil film in Kerala.
