Kalavani - Review

Kalavani is a watchable entertainer with some boring portions in the first half.

Vimal(I think this is the hero's real name) has done a decent job. Heroine reminds Subramaniyapuram Swathi. Actually after reading some reviews, i thought the movie would be on par with films like Nadodigal, Subramaniyapuram etc. But the movie was very normal.

The biggest strength of the movie is the humor content in it. The story is very ordinary and one would've seen such stories in 80's and 90's films. It is just about the happenings of a person in a village, who is aimless in his life. But due to some decent comedy scenes, even such a wafer thin story makes you sit and watch the film completely. Most of the scenes in the movie were quite natural and not cinematic. This is another strength of the film.

In terms of music "Damma Damma" song is humble. Other songs and BGM were quite disappointing. Ganja Karupu's comedy is enjoyable. Saranya did her part well.

Over all, the movie is quite entertaining. If the director had concentrated on the first half and worked with a better technical team, then the movie would've been even better.

My rating : 3/5

Angadi Theru

A good movie from Vasantha Balan. He has shown the harsh reality that is happening in shops like Saravana Stores. He has shown the real quality of the cloths sold in such places. He has shown how people are ill treated and made to work like donkeys without any mercy.

Very good performance by the lead artists. Hats off.. The director had some humor content in the film which was very nice. That's because the entire movie was about the dark reality in a shopping mall and humor content in such a film will be a great sigh of relief and refreshment for audience who don't enjoy such dark films.

The greatest plus point of the film is REALITY. The film was very much natural and close to realism. G.V. Prakash and Vijay Antony has given a good music for this film. Thank god, there is no unnecessary duets or dream sequence.

The only drawback(Not really a drawback though)is the sad feeling which you get throughout the film. This film might not be liked by few people who watch only feel good entertainer. But as a movie, it was really nice and natural.

My rating : 4/5

Singam

The story of this film is just a rehash of many Masala movies. It reminds Hari's best commercial movie Samy. The concept of Villain kidnapping people reminds Surya's commercial hit KK.

Talking about the plus points of the film, the second half was quite racy. Surya-Prakash Raj scenes were quite entertaining, though they were nothing new. DSP background music was too noisy. It could've been much better. Two songs(She has stole my heart and En idhayam edhuvarai) were quite OK.

Surya's dialog delivery was quite better when compared to his mass(!) dialogs in movies like Aaru and Vel.

Anushka was a major let down in this movie(except for her glamor in songs). Surya-Anushka scenes were all boring. I wonder in how many films will the heroines fall in love after hero bashing up the people who tease her.

Vivek's so called comedies were boring and never evoked laughter. He has also done some crass acts in the name of comedy which were irritating.

Prakash Raj's role reminds his role in movies like Ghilli and Sivakasi. But still , he did justice to his role once again and it was quite enjoyable.

Overall, one might get a better feel about the movie as the second half is much better than the first half. If Hari had had a better first half with some good love and comedy scenes, then the movie would've been quite convincing. Surya's Ayan was better than this film, but at the same time, this is far better a movie when compared to movies like Aadhavan.

Verdict - Above average.

ASAL Review

Saw this movie in my laptop today(14/6/2010).

Let me first point out the plus points(Very few) in this film.

Technically, the movie was good. The camera work was sleek and stylish.(I heard the camera man is an assistant of Nirav Shah. Not sure about it) Stunt sequences were good.

Saran tried to give a movie like Billa but failed to deliver it successfully. Its an ordinary revenge story.

Performances by everyone were absolutely pathetic. Especially, the Villain was damn funny. Yogi Sethu as don Samosa failed to evoke laughter. Bhavana was wasted and Sameera's role was also not interesting.

Ajith's screen presence might be a sigh of relief for his hardcore fans but even he didn't look convincing like how he was in movies like Billa. Barathwaj's songs were pathetic to say the least. Overall, even if one watches this movie without any expectations, he will end up getting disappointed.

ASAL - Padam partha Rasigargalin uyir USAL

Rating : 1.5/5

I hope Ajith's 50th film will be good. All the best. [:)]

Ghilli - revisit in Sathyam Cinemas

First of all, i thank the owners of Sathyam Cinemas for screening a movie like Gilli in such a prestigious multiplex.

Each and every hero has a special movie in his career. For instance, our Superstar Rajnikanth has Basha. It is a movie that can be watched 'n' number of times. Similar to that, our Ilayathalapathy Vijay has Gilli, which without any doubt, is his career best film.

The atmosphere was terrific in Sathyam Cinemas. It was a 240 seater theater(Seasons) and almost 90% of the seats were full @ morning 8 30. The movie has been played umpteen times in Television but still it is able to attract repeat audience. This itself is a great achievement for the cast and crew of Gilli.

When the Kabadi Kabadi song was played, people threw paper and even started dancing like anything. But since the theater people entered the hall, those dancing crowd were asked to be seated in their respective places. The whistles and cheers were extraordinary for each and every catchy dialog. Not only Vijay, even Trisha and Prakash Raj received lot of applause for their rocking performance.

Vijay might have danced for many folk songs, but still, Appadi Podu stands unique and exciting even now. The chemistry between Vijay and Trisha is really good.

Over all , it was like a festival season in 'seasons' for Vijay fans.

Vinnai Thandi Varuvaya - Review

VTV: Very Average

Saw the movie in Bala Abhirami theater today.(Ofcourse, Houseful)

The first half of the movie was quite good. It was really nice to see Simbu playing such a simple character. No unwanted heroism, no one liners etc etc. He was quite apt for the role.

Trisha was looking really nice in the film. Her Chemistry with Simbu, especially in songs were really good. She did her role quite well, though it was not quite convincingly sketched by the director.

ARR BGM and songs were splendid. This is one of the major plus point of the film. Cinematography was also good.

Talking about the drawbacks of the film, the second half of the movie was not good. It was really slow. The twist in the climax was really shocking and it was quite unwanted. The director could've handled the second half quite well. If the second half had been on par with the first half, then it would've been a nice romantic entertainer.

Overall my rating is 2.5/5.

Can been seen once in theaters if you go and watch it without any expectations.
